Doula Support for Pregnancy & Birth

A doula is a trained professional who provides emotional, physical, and informational support during pregnancy, labor, and the early postpartum period. Doulas do not provide medical care, but they play a powerful role in helping families feel calm, informed, and supported through the entire birth experience.

Many Vita Nova Midwifery families choose to add a doula to their birth team for extra hands-on support at home and, if needed, during a transfer.

Recommended Doulas

Many Vita Nova Midwifery families appreciate having a starting point when looking for doula support. Here are several doulas in the area that families I serve have used and recommended. You’re welcome to connect with any doula who feels like the right fit for your family.

What Does a Doula Do?

  • Offer continuous emotional support (encouragement, reassurance, and a calm presence)

  • Suggest comfort measures like position changes, massage, counter-pressure, breathing, and relaxation techniques

  • Help you and your partner understand what’s happening in labor and what your options are

  • Support your partner so they feel confident and included, not overwhelmed

  • Help protect a peaceful, respectful environment that aligns with your birth preferences

Doula vs. Midwife: What’s the Difference?

It can be confusing to sort out who does what at a homebirth. Here’s a simple way to think about it:

  • Your midwife is your medical provider. I monitor the health of you and your baby, provide clinical care, and make recommendations about safety.

  • Your doula is your support person. They do not make medical decisions or perform clinical tasks. Instead, they focus on your comfort, coping, and emotional well-being.

  • Both roles are important and complementary. Together, we create a strong team around you.

Why Consider a Doula for Homebirth?

Families who work with a doula often report:

  • Feeling more confident and prepared going into labor

  • Needing less pain medication and fewer interventions in hospital settings

  • A stronger sense of being heard, supported, and respected

  • Partners who feel more involved and less stressed

  • An easier emotional transition in the early postpartum period

While a doula is not required for homebirth, many families find that having one more experienced, compassionate person dedicated to their comfort is incredibly valuable.
