Pediatric Care for Your New Baby
Pediatric care focuses on the health and development of your baby and child. After a homebirth, your baby will need a pediatrician or family practice provider who can continue routine checkups, monitor growth, and be available if concerns come up.

Many Vita Nova Midwifery families choose their baby’s provider during pregnancy so they feel prepared and supported from the very beginning.
Recommended Pediatric Providers
Many families appreciate having a starting point when looking for a pediatric provider. Here are a few local practices that families I serve have used and recommended. You’re always welcome to choose any provider that feels like the right fit for your family.
What Does a Pediatric Provider Do?
A pediatrician or family practice provider caring for your baby will typically:
-
Perform newborn and well-child visits to monitor growth, feeding, and development
-
Check your baby’s weight, head circumference, and milestones over time
-
Offer guidance on feeding, sleep, crying, and general newborn care
-
Discuss and provide vaccination options based on your preferences and their practice policies
-
Be available to evaluate illnesses, concerns, or injuries as your child grows
Pediatrician vs. Midwife: What’s the Difference?
It can be helpful to understand how our roles fit together in caring for your baby:
-
Your midwife provides immediate newborn care after birth and short-term follow-up in the early days and weeks. I assess your baby’s transition after birth, monitor early feeding, and check on your baby at postpartum visits.
-
Your pediatric provider is your baby’s ongoing primary care provider. They follow your child’s health and development over time and are the main contact for routine and sick visits.
Both are important. Think of your midwife as your early newborn specialist and your pediatric provider as your baby’s long-term medical home.
Why Establish Pediatric Care Early?
Families who choose a pediatric provider during pregnancy often feel:
-
More prepared for the first newborn visit after homebirth
-
Confident knowing who to call if questions or concerns come up
-
Supported with clear guidance on feeding, growth, and sleep
-
Reassured by having a consistent provider following their baby over time
Choosing a pediatric provider before birth helps create a smooth transition from homebirth care to ongoing well-child care.
